Newbie on the Rise

Now, you may think I’m crazy, but the first thing I do every morning is open my closet door and say “Good morning girls!,” to all my clothes. I’m that girl from “Confessions of a Shopaholic”; mannequins talk to me. And each piece of clothing that adorns my hangers, each pair of shoes perched on my shoe rack, along with every handbag I covet, has a special connection to me.

Some people call me a shopaholic, but to my family and friends, I’m Aubrey Long, fashionista extraordinaire—- eighteen years old and originally from Bronx, New York; New York, a fashionista’s dream scene.

In truth, I haven’t always been into fashion, but by the time I started high school I was ready to make a statement with every outfit I wore. I’m not a quiet girl who uses fashion to stand out; instead I use fashion to compliment my mood and evoke reaction from those around me. Who doesn’t like walking into a room full of people, who you know are just waiting to see what the outfit dujour will be?

And while this is my first time writing a story for Couture in the Suburbs, it’s not my first time getting to work with the amazing Lindsay Viker. I’ve done photoshoots for the blog before (check out some of the photos here), when I was a sassy blonde.

Aubrey Long Lindsay Viker Couture in the Suburbs

Aubrey featured in Accessorize Accordingly

Now, I’m back feistier than ever as a red head, and ready to share with you the newest trends, and where you can locate them. For my first photoshoot I was lucky enough to be able to wear clothes from Clothes Minded boutique.

I just love having versatile pieces in my wardrobe, which is why I was instantly drawn to the tan and black tribal maxi skirt, that could easily be paired with a cute crop top for a night out on the town, or a loose fitting off-the-shoulder shirt to wear during the day, for running errands, having lunch with friends, or going to school. I also love to pair long, simple necklaces to add a little more pizazz to the outfit.

Another must-have in my wardrobe is a pair of comfy jeans that can expand and shrink with me when I’ve indulged in one too many cupcakes with my besties over the weekend. Pairing those jeans with a loose fitting blouse with floral lace accents adds a little sass to the outfit, while the flowers intertwined throughout the lace add an innocent babydoll feel.

Since this shirt has a low neckline, I chose to add a short horseshoe-like necklace for that extra sizzle.   A colored heel makes this outfit pop even more. Don’t be scared to add color to a neutral outfit; it transforms an okay outfit into a statement outfit within a matter of seconds!

You can never have too many options, but one thing is for sure, when it comes to building an outfit, classic pieces are key and ensure that your finished look is nothing short of spectacular.

Although quantity sometimes seems better than quality, finding essential pieces at more expensive prices is sometimes the better option. These pieces allow you to dress up or down, add pops of colorful shoes, wear long or short necklaces, and mix and match different  pieces in order to create new looks. And remember, the mannequins are never wrong!

Join the Party- With Ettika Jewelry

It’s officially spring time again! Winter boots are being switched out for gladiator sandals, jeans for summer dresses, and that means sleeves are getting shorter and shorter.

Last season was all about showing off your bejeweled “arm party” and Ettika Jewelry is keeping that trend fresh and updated this spring season. What we love about Ettika is their personable and engaging connection with their bloggers and customers. We had the privilege of showing off one of our favorite pieces from Ettika while strutting at Arizona State University: The Glistening Glimmer Tan Braid Bracelet.

Ettika Jewelry Skyler Scott

What we love about this particular piece is the fact that is so versatile. It serves as a foundation if you will, for a signature Ettika arm party. This bracelet comes in a variety of colors but we liked this tan color because it’s a neutral and matches with pretty much everything. It’s made from real leather and crystals which adds a little “pizazz” to any outfit.

We knew this was going to be a great high-quality product just from the initial presentation when we received the bracelet. We were pleasantly surprised by the custom Ettika bag that the bracelet came in. This is ideal for storage purposes and each Ettika item you purchase comes with a custom bag.

Ettika consistently shows appreciation for their customers and followers by doing monthly giveaways and releasing special coupon codes through their various social media outlets. A coupon code that is good for 25% off your first purchase is EXCL25.

On their user-friendly website, you can browse everything from new arrivals and best sellers, to their diverse collection of necklaces and earrings as well. Ettika has got us hooked on their arm candy and we can’t stack enough of their adorned pieces of art on our wrists. Participate in the next Ettika Twitter Party with us on Monday, March 17th in order to win some arm candy of your own!

Boutique on the Go Go

Mobile boutiques are popping up all around the country. And we are lucky enough to have a fabulous one here in Arizona.

Boutique a Go~Go was started my Amy Falkenberg who realized that women wanted to be able to shop at events like street fairs, girls nights out, office parties, etc. She thought what could be better than bringing a store to them. Her truck allows her customers to have all the fun and beauty of a store with an insanely convenient location.

boutique a go go fashion boutique trailer

Amy has designed the space to showcase a variety of unique products including jewelry, bags, and gift items. She even has some clothing (easy layering pieces that we all love having in our wardrobe).

We love that Amy supports many local designers, and manages to keep her price point really reasonable. And, this November, Amy is celebrating her 1 year anniversary. A huge congratulations is in order because we know that first year of business can be a tough one, especially when you are bringing a brand new concept to a city like Phoenix.

If you want to see more of Boutique a Go~Go for yourself, check out her schedule of events this month. And of course, keep up with her Facebook page to see what new arrivals she has in store (or more appropriately, in truck).

Emerald green is such a fantastic color for fall, and I love the way this top pops against these brown cord pants. The Kendra Scott team and I decided to pair black and gold jewelry with this look because we love mixing neutrals.

The coral pants and azure jewelry was such a wonderful combination. Pairing the black top with these pants kept the whole ensemble from looking too summery. The shape of these Kendra Scott pieces was so modern. I was so obsessed with this whole look.

Betsey Johnson Hits the Arizona Runway at Tucson Fashion Week

Most people out there don’t associate Tucson, Arizona with couture fashion, but last night at Tucson Fashion Week would have silenced any doubters.  With a fantastic line-up and professional presentation, it was a Tucson fashion event not to be missed.

Not only was there a great cast of local designers to rub elbows with, but attendees also got to mix and mingle with individuals like Bert Keeter from Project Runway, Susan Claassen, and none other than the incomparable Betsey Johnson.  In rubbing elbows with some of these incredible people, I was able to snag an exclusive interview with Betsey herself at the beginning of the night, and here’s what she had to say:

Betsey Johnson Tuscon Fashion Week runway show

Betsey Johnson with Couture in the Suburbs

What made you decide to come to Tucson Fashion Week this year?

“Actually, my best buddy Douglas, an artist in Tucson is friends with a Daniel Asia that’s professor…history something something.  And then he’s connected with the museum, and I don’t know.  He asked me like a year and a half ago and I said ‘Oh great, I’ll get to see Douglas! I’ll get back to Tucson.’ I was here once before, years ago.”

What do you think it is about your design that inspires all different kinds of people?

“That’s what takes 45 years of hard work!  With all my product lines now, I mean jewelry, bags, shoes, they’re unlike my clothing. But, now I have dresses that fit real people. I mean me, I was cutting little tiny rock and roll things and punk things.

I think that, I don’t know, over all these years a lot of women, men (I get just as many guys who say ‘Love your work, Betsey I’m always paying for or unzipping my girlfriend’s dresses with you.’)  have just connected to the brand.

Yeah it’s just been something through press and just keeping the funny, fun, girly, punky, pretty product pumping.  And I kind of stuck with my true blue self through the time zones.”

What kind of advice would you give to someone interested in design or fashion industry?

“Well you have to know your shit.  You gotta cut, you gotta sew.  I never went to fashion design school, but I could always sew.  I learned from my mother, her neighbor girlfriends.  I think you just gotta put blinders on, kinda like those horses in central park, and just go full speed ahead.  Don’t think too much and just kind of do, and make, and be nice.

I think at the end of the day, the good guys finish first, not last.  And you have to work hard.  I always tell [people] if I can make it, then it can be made… My main design idea was make it affordable, and comfortable, and feel like a dancing costume because that’s what I really wanted to be.”

Once Betsey was whisked away, it was time to head into the lobby to talk to some designers!  In particular, I was able to chat with Bella Argentina designer Courtney Williams (who we’ve featured before. Check out the story here) about her collection of beautiful jewelry inspired by different steps and aspects of the Argentine Tango.  One of her necklaces even features a key to an Argentinian dance hall.  I also spoke with Nicole Ele about her classically edgy, scientifically inspired line, Alkamie.

But before long, it was almost showtime.  This was honestly the first legitimate fashion show I have ever attended, and what a show it was!  With eight fantastically different lines walking down the runway, and such an enthused crowd, it was not only a night to remember, but a major step forward for the Tucson fashion scene as a whole.  Here’s a little peek at some of the looks seen at the show, and their inspired creators.

Frans Baviera:

This collection had a definitively classic feel to it.  The use of stark colors and bold lines in several pieces was balanced out with the richer colors and softer lines of others.  This was definitely one of my favorite collections, and represented a superbly fashionable winter woman.

Too Strong:

This design team had an intriguing approach, choosing to focus on casual, down-to-earth looks incorporating fabrics such as denim.  It definitely seemed that a southwestern influence was present in these fresh, casual garments that one could easily imagine seeing on the street.

Oceane Kim:

There was an intrigue to this designer’s work that is unique, and creates a feeling of youthful, mysterious beauty.  Focusing on rich colors and sweeping lines, Oceane Kim’s work was definitely an attention-grabber.

Donni Charm:

Founded by University of Arizona student Alyssa Wasko, Donni Charm specializes in eye-catching scarves that complement any day-to-day outfit.  With a fantastic array of styles and colors for the fall, anyone would be sure to be both more stylish and a little cozier as the temperatures dip.

Candy Strike:

It’s refreshing to see a designer focus on applying her creativity to producing couture fashion for normal women.  Elizabeth Albert has done just that with her line of glamorous, slightly sassy fall line for plus sized women.  Her use of fabrics and colors to accentuate these women’s natural curves was impressive, and a welcome change to the runway.

Laura Tanzer:

We really appreciated designer Laura Tanzer’s clean lines and complementary color groupings.  She managed to take several different solid colors and create a line that not only has a distinct stamp, but that has a bit of an edgy classiness that is, without a doubt, both fun and practical.

Julia Love:

Designer Cybil Waite’s line was very interesting in that it consisted of many different elements and pieces, including exciting colors and different types of garments.  It consisted generally of shorter pieces like shorts and skirts, with more understated colors in fabrics that had a distinct sheen.  Using these different ideas, Cybil’s line showed the marriage of pragmatism and fun.

Betsey Johnson:

Betsey never fails to bring a whimsical, punky presence to the runway and this was no exception.  Her line was bright and bold, and infused with the same vivacity as the woman herself.  Ideas that in anyone else’s hands would become a visual cacophony, are somehow brought together in a way that always inspires people of all different perspectives.

At the end of the day, Friday of TFW in and of itself was an experience difficult to rival.  We want to say a huge thank you to the entire team of Tucson Fashion Week who not only coordinated such a fantastic event, but who also allowed us to be part of it.  It was my pleasure to attend on behalf of Couture in the Suburbs, and even though it was a total thrill to meet Betsey Johnson and speak with her, all of the designers showed well, and we look forward to seeing the fashion scene in this great state continue to grow and mature.

Phoenix Fashion Week 2013 ~ Day 4

Phoenix Fashion Week at Talking Stick Resort 2013 wrapped up on Saturday night. The energy was infectious as we walked down the stairs and outside to the long runway for one final time this year (oh, of course there will be other fashion shows, but there’s just something about everyone coming together several nights in a row for multiple shows that becomes infectious. If you were there, we bet you know what we’re talking about!)

Enzoani begun Saturday night’s shows with a collection of gowns that ranged from wedding dresses to more formal looks. There were several looks with beautiful draping and interesting beading, and reminded us of a high school girl’s dream prom dress. We wouldn’t have minded being transported back in time to our younger selves searching for THE right dress for the “best night of our lives” (our team is too young to think about marriage, so we are going back to prom instead).

The Silvia Bours show was up next. This designer was one of our favorites from Phoenix Fashion Week 2012, and was again this year as well. She truly understands what girls want in a dress and delivers it in a way that’s playful and young, while managing to stay absolutely classy. And let us just say, that is no easy task.

We absolutely adored the Phantom of the Opera theme, complete with dramatic music and the signature masks. And, of course, the styling was perfect with big sparkly bows wrapped around the ankles, platform glittery heels, and messy updos.

Elevee continued the show with a collection of menswear that was absolutely on point. We loved their show last year (see photos here), and thought this year was just as awesome. As much as we loved the clothes (and the male models!), the best part of the show was without a doubt Percy Knox’s adorable son opening the runway, strutting his stuff, and joining dad at the end of the show with just as much attitude and swagger as the designer.

We wanted to talk to someone who really understands and loves men’s fashion to find out what they thought of the collection, so we caught up with Dustin Hoyman from IndieStitch.com after the show.

“I am consistently impressed with Elevee and their take on a man’s classic wardrobe. The use of textures elevates a simple sport coat to a modern style piece. The impeccable attention to fit even shows in a restyled baseball jacket, adding a layer of sartorial impression to an old standard. Percy and Elevee really set the standard for what a man’s closet should strive to be.”

Doux Belle started off the emerging designer shows on Saturday night, and did she start it off strong! We were so impressed by how far this designer has come since we first saw her at the Emerging Designer Announcement. Her pieces really do showcase the vintage elegance she strives for while managing to stay relevant and modern through the textures and silhouettes. The styling was perfect with the hats and gloves, and really made for a fun show to watch.  It’s amazing to think that Rachel Wagner is an emerging designer! We are so happy that this Arizona designer was able to showcase her collection on the runway and are looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

Ja’ire continued the emerging designer portion of the show. This sisterly duo started off their show with a musical performance by one of the designers, and then unleashed their models onto the runway. This show had… a lot going on, to say the least. There was bright colors, numerous accessories, and slits everywhere. There was some uniqueness to the designs, but unfortunately, the poor fabric choice and over styling kept this show from being at the taste level we would have liked to see. The sisters could improve tremendously by learning how to simplify and choose the correct fabrics for their designs.

Michelle Hébert was on the runway next. This designer had been our favorite for quite some time. We felt that she understood dramatic fashion and new how to strike a balance between feminine, sexy, and edgy.

Although we did love some pieces like the stick dress and the red burned dress, as a whole we were underwhelmed. Everything in the show looked fantastic, but we just expected a little bit more from a designer we had raved so much about. We think that in the future, Michelle should stick to avant garde looks for editorial fashion shoots rather than trying to be commercial and ready to wear.

Phoenix Fashion Week 2013 Michelle Hebert Michelle Hebert Phoenix Fashion Week 2013

Trang Nguyen finished the emerging designer shows of Phoenix Fashion Week 2013. This designer played with pink, white and red in fun feminine shapes. We were pleasantly surprised by how easily we could see this collection moving from the runway to the streets without missing a beat. You better keep your eye on Trang Nguyen ladies and gentlemen, because this designer is just getting started.

After the emerging designer shows finished, Brian Hill called all those who competed in the Emerging Designer Contest to the stage to announce the winner. The Phoenix Fashion Week team chooses the winner based on several categories including how they reach out to media, how many stores to pick up their collection and, of course, how the audience reacts to their collections.

The top 4 emerging designers were Stephanie Gentry, Dolcessa Swimwear, Medium Apparel, and Ja’ire. A huge congratulations to Dolcessa, the winner of the 2013 Emerging Designer contest. We think you absolutely deserve it!

To find out more about this brand, check out the story where we originally announced that this nationally publicized brand would be showcasing at Phoenix Fashion Week 2013. Read the story here.

There were 2 more winners announced Saturday evening. Denis Danicic and Madison Farrell were announced as the No7 cosmetics Model of the Year and will be signed with one of Arizona’s top modeling agencies, The Agency Arizona. Congratulations guys!

Loin Cloth Button Down Shirts Phoenix Fashion Week 2013Madison Farrell Emerging Model winner

Rocky Gathercole closed out Phoenix Fashion Week 2013 with an awesome show full of glitz, glamour and drama. We loved the way this Philippino designer transitioned from intricate whites to bold beautiful color, to dark gothic drama (with the gothic drama being our FAVORITE). The hair and makeup was absolutely epic and helped make the whole collection totally showstopping. Bravo Gathercole!

As Phoenix Fashion Week comes to a close, we want to say congratulations to everyone who showed a collection one more time. It’s certainly not easy to put your work on display for people to view and comment on. We applaud you all for putting yourselves out there.

A huge thank you as well to the Phoenix Fashion Week team for allowing us to participate in the whole experience, and for supporting our blog as we all continue to be a part of the scene to help push Arizona fashion forward.

If you missed the other nights of Phoenix Fashion Week, recap with our stories on Fashionably Pink, Day 2, and Day 3.

Phoenix Fashion Week 2013 – Day 3

Phoenix Fashion Week at Talking Stick Resort 2013 continued on Friday night with 8 more shows from emerging and established designers. A well dressed crowd took their seats and was ready to be amazed at what designers from around the world had to offer. We put on our party dresses (check out our instagram to see some pics @suburbscouture) and got ready for a night of fun.

Gents started the night with casual looks that included everything from blazers, to t-shirts and baseball caps. We were a little surprised to see that the female models were…well, pants less! Oh but don’t worry ladies. We got some eye candy during the finale walk when ALL the male models walked out shirtless while the ladies modeled the best look of the show, over sized tanks that said “Call my aGENT” (Get it?)

But, honestly, our favorite part of that whole show was seeing Google Glass on the runway. We love when fashion and technology cross paths and were super excited that Gents continued in DVF’s footsteps at Phoenix Fashion Week (if you have no idea what we’re talking about, check out this article.)

Next up, JHaus hit the runway with country-esque denim and casual every day wear. Compared to her debut at last year’s fashion week (see photos and recap here), which consisted of denim looks and elegant ball gowns, we saw the all American influence behind this year’s collection.

Going for the “girl next door” look, we saw a lot of button down work shirts, distressed jeans, and scuffed lace up boots. What we noticed about this collection was the wearability of each clothing item. You could take each look from the runway to the street with ease. According to the creative mind behind the collection, Jennifer Hausmann, that is the goal the brand was hoping to achieve.

Paulie Gibson also returned from Phoenix Fashion Week’s emerging designer contest last year. We have to admit, we weren’t the biggest fans of last year’s over the top collection (check out the photos here). Although he toned down the patterns (yes, this is toned down) and somewhat improved the shapes and fits of his garment, we still have trouble seeing how this collection fits into a typical man’s wardrobe. Maybe Paulie Gibson isn’t trying to be for the typical man, so instead of shaking our heads again this year, we’re going to chuckle a little and let the males make the decision. So boys, are you reaching for these items for your updated wardrobe?

(P.S. If you were there and noticed that the designer didn’t walk the finale with his collection, it’s because he missed his flight! I know we were curious, so we wanted to pass along that tidbit to any of you who were wondering)

One of our personal favorite designers, Bri Seeley left us saying “oh la la” with a collection that resembled what you would see on the catwalk in Paris. Seeley named this collection Silence “because the woman wearing the clothing could walk into any room and exude femininity and confidence without having to say a word.” What we loved the most about the show was the complimentary accessories. Everything from oversized Jackie O. sunglasses to Birkin look- alike handbags left us wanting more. Great job Bri! Phoenix is happy to welcome you back from LaLa land.

DPC by Dora Yim begun the emerging designer portion of the show. We particularly liked this collection because we understood the designers influence and knew exactly who her customer was. As women with busy lives, we also appreciated how Dora Yim added details to the collection to help women transition from the office to cocktail hour seamlessly. We particularly liked the dress with sleeves that moved from your shoulders to your upper arm depending on what type of occasion you need to dress for. Great job Dora.

DPC by Dora Yim day to night LBD Phoenix Fashion week 2013 DPC by Dora Yim moving sleeves dress Phoenix Fashion Week 2013

Herbert Victoria continued the show. If anyone could take the cake for most eclectic outstanding prints it would be this designer right here.  The tribal influence was apparent within each of his pieces. Between the geometric patterns, eye-catching stitching, statement jewelry from Melis Accessories and handbags from Beautiifash, we would not be surprised if the entire venue felt the energy radiating from this collection. If we had to sum it up in a singular word, “fierce” conveys it perfectly.  (Cue the bongos!)

Proverbs by Efua then took the stage, starting with a video introducing her collection and speaking about her passion for ending human trafficking. It’s a very touching cause and one that we support wholeheartedly. That being said, we wished the designs lived up to how awesome the meaning of the brand is. The show was overall pretty safe and reserved… except for the hair, which was all over the models’ faces in the wind. We would love to see the taste level raised by this brand because we absolutely love supporting brands with a mission.

Last but not certainly not least, Stephanie Gentry left us with our violet “creative” auras glowing. Her collection took us to a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” fantasyland with sheer luminescent tops and flowy dresses. The show started out somewhat dark and edgy given the set mood but quickly transformed into a dream.  Gentry’s overall collection can be best described as “luxury fashion for the woman who wants to take the world by storm” and now we realize the power behind the storm due to this breath-taking collection.

One really special moment from the night was when the Cabana Inspire Fashion Design Contest winner was announced. Last year, our good friend Ashley Cooper designed a great shirt that kick started her business of doing super fun prints. This year, Emery Guzman won the competition which means a $1,000 scholarship for her! Congrats Emery! We hope that this helps you get started your business started just like it did for Ashley Cooper.

Top 10 Accessories You Need for this Fall. By Guest Blogger – Daria P.

Are you ready to update your wardrobe for fall? Then you know what to do: start thinking about accessories! They’re the cheapest and easiest way to transition from one season to another, while also staying on trend.

Since Arizona weather is usually pretty mild this time of the year, let’s not think about bundling up in wool just yet. Instead, let’s have a look at some trendy, beautiful, and absolutely wearable accessories:

Fall 2013 fashion trends

1. Cream color Fur bag by River Island. They’re all the rage on the catwalk! Many high fashion designers brought fur at our fingertips, although we have to admit, we love faux versions most. Whether you pick a clutch or a top handle bag, you’re definitely going to have fun carrying it around.

2. Velvet shoes by House of Harlow. Instead of suede, opt for velvet this fall! It looks royal on high heels, and fun on booties. The fabric is lightweight, and you’ll get that retro look everyone is trying to find these days.

3. Hardware belt by John Lewis. Delicate belts are replaced by chunky ones this season, and the focus is on the hardware buckle. Even if the belt is thin, like this one, you can still get all the edge with a big, metallic feature.

4. Unisex sunglasses. You and your beau can share a pair of sunglasses! Some of the best unisex styles are aviators and wayfarers, the former being more authoritarian, and the latter more approachable. Check out AllBrandsGlasses to find a great assortment of unisex sunglasses for this fall.

(As a sponsor of this post, AllBrandGlasses.com is offering our readers 5% off of their already discounted glasses! Use the code COUTURE1 at checkout!)

5. Pearls by ASOS. Pearls make you think of jewelry, but that’s not the only way you can wear them this fall (although we do love a good pearl on the finger or wrist). Try embellished dresses, bags, even shoes, and you’ll feel precious at all times.

6. Ear cuff by BCBG. This edgy piece of jewelry is everywhere lately! You only need one hole pierced in your ear to get the look of a multi-pierced one. Studs, rhinestones, and, why not, pearls, all look fab in ear cuffs.

7. Top Shop Bug jewelry. It doesn’t have to be spiders or anything freaky: think bees and ladybugs, and enjoy their sparkly wings on bracelets, necklaces, brooches and rings. The possibilities are endless!

8. Embellished beanie by Markus Lupfer. It keeps you warm, it hides your bad hair days and it’s sparkly? That’s right, the season’s beanie is all that. It can feature anything, from studs to sequins – what matters is that it shines!

9. Ethnic scarf by Mango. When the wind starts blowing, you’re going to wish you had this baby in your (fur) bag! The ethnic print is just a bonus, since it’s still one of the trendiest patterns of the moment.

10. Precious hair accessories by John Lewis. Think Great Gatsby, and start from there! Sparkly pieces, gemstones, metals will look incredible on hair pins, headbands or even elastic hair ties.

Thanks Daria and AllBrandsGlasses.com for sharing your favorite pieces for fall with our readers! There are so many cool brands that we didn’t know about it included in the list. And, of course, another thank you for the coupon code. I think a new pair of sunnies is definitely in order.

Behind the Scenes: Bilby and Moss Photo Shoot

We love a fabulous photo shoot… what fashion blogger doesn’t? So, of course, our editor, Lindsay Viker, was thrilled when she had the extra-special opportunity to go behind the scenes of a photo shoot at the Sedona airport for the relaunch of the men and women’s brand, Bilby and Moss. Well… technically, she was front and center as one of the models for the travel wear brand. (How fun!)

When she was offered the opportunity, she talked to Bilby and Moss owners, Jeanne and Jerry, and asked them if she could share with all of you what it’s actually like to do a photo shoot like this. And, because they loved the blog, they agreed!

“Christina, a beautiful young lady who was helping Jeanne and Jerry relaunch Bilby and Moss, approached me at Phoenix Fashion Week and asked if I ever modeled. I laughed and said I usually prefer to stay behind the camera, but will dabble in occasionally for my fashion blog. Well, she went on to say that she was a Bilby and Moss representative and that they saw me during the show and thought I would make the perfect model for their relaunch. We exchanged business cards, and soon enough, were e-mailing about details of me coming up to Sedona.”

“The first day was full of fittings and planning looks for the shoot. Then, Bilby and Moss was nice enough to treat me to a delicious dinner at the Hilton, and drove me to the casita I stayed in (beautiful room with a wood burning fire place, walk in shower, and jacuzzi tub!). I was up super early to do hair and makeup for the shoot, and then we headed to the Sedona airport. I was super nervous, but the photographer, Courtney Fitzpatrick, quickly put me at ease.”

“It was absolutely freezing when we first got to the airport, but luckily it warmed up by the time we shot the tank top looks. The view was absolutely breathtaking, and it was awesome to be shooting near the runway as planes were flying in. It was such a thrill! Of course, Sedona airport security made sure we were a safe distance away!

I felt a little awkward in front of the camera at first. But, with the encouragement from Courtney and the rest of the Bilby and Moss team saying I was “a natural” I eased up and thoroughly enjoyed it! I absolutely loved the Bilby and Moss shirts, Raven Denim pants, and beautiful jewelry I got to wear!”

Oh, and I have some pretty cool pictures to show my grandkids one day. Shop the Garment District with Phoenix Fashion Week

Doux Belle Phoenix Fashion Week 2013 Emerging Designer

We are the first to admit… sometimes the #LifeofaFashionBlogger is pretty awesome. Friday night at the Phoenix Fashion Week Shop Garment District event was a perfect example of all the fun we get to have, right here in Arizona. Studio 3D was packed wall to wall with fashion savvy individuals. The drinks were pouring and the crowd was buzzing (and sweating a little bit… it got pretty hot with hundreds of bodies in one studio space). We walked around the venue, saying hi to some of our favorites (like the Living Dreams crew, Vanja and Lauren from Phoenix Fashion Week, and one of our favorite fashion bloggers, Simply Audree Kate).

We loved seeing how the designers have expanded their collections since we first saw them at the Emerging Designer Announcement (Read the story here). After interviewing several of them for our “Ones to Watch” story, we knew that the show was going to be spectacular, and we were definitely not disappointed. The best part about the Emerging Designer Competition is the variety of styles that you end up seeing on the runway.

Some of our favorites from the show were Michelle Hébert‘s gorgeous gowns, the pocket details on Loin Cloth’s shorts, Doux Belle‘s feminine dresses, all the awesome Melis Accessories‘ cuffs and the playful styling in the Medium Apparel show.

Shop Garment District made us more excited than ever for Phoenix Fashion Week in October. We know that these designers definitely won’t disappoint.

The ABC’s of Bold Beauty

Bold is beautiful. This summer, we say it’s go big or go home. We’re talking bold makeup, bold hair, bold fashion… we can’t get enough! Don’t worry if it sounds intimidating at first. These 3 easy steps will help take your look from boring to BOLD in a flash.

Lindsay Viker bold beauty bold brows red lip

A: Accessories

Choose pieces that are eye-catching and daring. Mix metals, shapes, and textures to add instant drama to your look. But make sure your ensemble doesn’t get too overwhelming. If necklaces are your thing, pair them with a plain top. If you want big rings, choose smaller bracelets. The right colors and proportions in your clothing can prevent your accessories from going from bold to messy.

bold beauty bold accessories bold brows

B: Brows

This trend has been seen on all the major fashion runways. Bold brows are a definite do for your beauty look. For our photographs, we used dark brown brow powder and angled brush, but you could also use a brow pencil or even tinted brow gel.

Start by brushing your brow hairs into the shape you want and then take your brush and draw a line slightly above your actual brow. Blend the color down into the hairs, and continue filling in the brows. Tada! You’re set with runway-ready brows that will take your smokey eye to the next level.

bold beauty super tight curls

C: Curls

Have some fun with your hair and save it from the boredom of your flat iron. To get this dramatic ‘do, we used a 1/2 inch tapered wand (and about 1hr with Mr. Lino Martinez at Park Avenue Blow Dry & Beauty Bar). We think pop culture’s iconic curly-haired ladies (like Sandy from Grease, Carrie Bradshaw of Sex in the City and, of course, Madonna) would be proud to see young fashionistas rocking a look each one of them wore so proudly.

bold beauty black maxi dress

So there you go. Bold Beauty is as easy as ABC. All you have to do is throw on a dress that makes you look and feel absolutely amazing. May we suggest a figure-flattering black maxi dress? Easy to wear, and oh so chic. Now strut your stuff darling.

P.S. A HUGE thank you to Lino at Park Avenue Blow Dry & Beauty Bar for my amazing hair and makeup! You rock. And a special thank you to Ashley Viker as well for being an amazing photographer.

MIM Rocks Fashion

MIM Rocks Fashion

Friday night we headed out to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix for the 4th annual MIM Rocks Fashion show by Phoenix Fashion Week. The top 5 stylists in Arizona paired up with designers and local boutiques to show the audience the best trends for spring.

Typically, all stylists’ work is done behind the scenes- pulling looks, choosing accessories, coordinating hair and makeup, and, of course, deciding the right model for each look. However, Phoenix Fashion Week really wanted to spotlight the work of these super-talented individuals. With behind-the-scenes videos before every show, guests were given a chance to learn about the stylist’s inspiration for the show, and how they decided which looks would walk down the runway. We loved learning a little bit more about the hidden world of fashion runway shows.

Brian Hil Phoenix Fashion Week

Phoenix Fashion Week director, Brian Hill, started the show by telling the crowd why the MIM is such an important location for the show. Music can inspire the whole runway show for a designer or stylist. It has the power to transform the show from models walking in a straight line to a real production, full of fantasy, power and mystery. The crowd got to witness the power of music first hand when local singer, Estefy, belted out two amazing songs. This girl was young and fierce. We absolutely loved her vibe.

Clothes Minded opened the show (Remember our story from their grand opening?). Stylist Rochelle York was inspired by bright colors and lots of movement for spring. Statement necklaces and fun wedges completed the looks. The overall vibe was girly and flirty – great looks for spring picnics or effortless date night looks.

Divaz boutique, styled by Yekatherina Bruner, was up next. Yekatherina was inspired by French deserts like sorbets and macaroons. She chose a soft color palette with bold shapes. Our favorite look of the night was the white jumper in the first photo of the story. An exposed back takes this look from sophisticated to sexy. It’s powerful, yet sensual – a combination we love.

Next up were the boys. Amir Saebi of Amir’s La Voute was without a doubt our favorite show of the night. His male models looked dapper, yet approachable and fun. He was the only stylist to really take any big risks, and step outside the box.

One particularly amazing look was this denim on denim look. First off, we can’t even get over the Chanel suspenders. And this boom box bag…. we’ve officially been transported to the ’90’s. This is just one great example of Amir choosing not to play it safe. Fantstic job.

Envy by Khanh, an emerging designer from Phoenix Fashion Week 2012 (see photos from his runway show here), took the runway next. Stylist Fawn Cheng added major sophistication to the show with beautiful black hats. However, we were hoping to see a little more variety in the accessories. Fawn Cheng has been one of our favorite Arizona stylists for quite some time, and we would have loved to see more from her. She definitely played it safe with shoes and jewelry. And in a show all about stylists, we would have love to see unexpected twists.

Next up was one of our Phoenix Fashion Week favorites, Bri Seeley, the winner of the 2012 emerging designer competition (see photos of the winning collection here). We spoke with Bri before the show and she told us how much she loved stylist Brian Swan’s pairings. “He’s putting my clothes together in ways I never would have thought of,” she told us.

Our favorite looks were the maxi dresses (we just can’t get enough of the movement they create). However, we would have loved to see some chunky accessories paired with these looks. Bri Seeley‘s clothes can obviously stand on their own but, again, because it’s a show all about stylists, we couldn’t help but want just a little bit more

Overall, we had an absolutely amazing time at MIM Rocks Fashion. The Phoenix Fashion Week team did a terrific job bringing together the worlds of music and fashion. And, of course, we can’t forget the stylists and musicians who made the night extra special.

Now, show the stylists how much you REALLY love them. Vote for your favorite on the Phoenix Fashion Week‘s Facebook page: Facebook.com/PhxFashionWeek (You know who we’re voting for, but try your best not to be biased)

From Model to Mentor — Micheline Etkin

Micheline Etkin is, without a doubt, one of Arizona’s most glamorous women. She struts the catwalk, floats down the Hollywood red carpet, travels the world, and most impressively, organizes events to help children in need. Of course we had to sit down with such an amazing person to find out more about her background, modeling career, and how she became a mentor to so many young girls.

How did you get started with fashion? Where did it all begin?

“I come from a family with fashion in their DNA; my father had a clothing factory and mom was his designer. She designed all of his collections for men, women and children– I always loved observing her working and many times I ended up being her personal model! {laughs}

In Brazil, there are these gigantic fashion and trade events for manufacturers, and my parents were invited to all of them. I would attend with my dad and all of his friends in the industry would preach ‘Oh my god, she {Micheline} needs to be a model’. At 14 years old, 5’10 I was a bit awkward, I never even would have dreamt that I would have been a model. I didn’t take up modeling until later in my life, but after so many requests from photographers and designers– I had to say yes.”

micheline etkin runway

At what point did your career kind of turn into a career in fashion?

“I was working with my mother in my dad’s factory, modeling, giving my opinions and even designing my own clothing as a child– a hobby. Our seamstress would come to visit me every Friday. Before her visit, Monday through Thursdays, I would be brainstorming and pull fabrics, zippers buttons and decide on sketches for her to create. After I would make my selections, I would present it to the seamstress and say ‘this is what I want.’ She would take some measurements in the morning before school, and during my lunch break I would return for a fitting. At 6PM, I would finally have my brand new garment. This took place every Friday, it was absolutely magical.

Also, when I was married, I was able to design all of my clothes for the honeymoon. It was fun to put my designing skills back to work. I still saved one skirt from the trip!”

“I seriously considered getting into design, but I constantly find myself traveling and you really can’t establish a business unless you’re present all of the time. Being a model just helped me be a part of it. The design process is still a passion of mine– just at the hand of other designers.

Now jewelry is a different story. I prefer to have my hand in every single shimmer and sparkle when it comes to my jewelry. Even if I’m buying a finished product, I’ll turn around and tweak it a bit here and there. I must put my own touch on it.”

Micheline is now an established model and represented by The Agency Arizona, one of the top modeling agencies here in the valley (and where one of our other favorite models, Madison Brown, is also signed. Remember her from the Chasing Beauty story?).

You’ve obviously traveled all over the world, but what do you love about Arizona that’s kept you here?

“We love Arizona, although I do miss Brazil a lot. I found this to be the perfect place to raise my kids. Though, I’ll go to Paris just for the food and fashion. Not forgetting Brazil and Lebanon– my two half-home countries.”

You work with a lot of organizations here in Phoenix like the Cardon Children’s Medical Center . How did you branch from modeling to your involvement in these organizations?

I’m so blessed to be working with Cardon Children’s, PANDA and CASA Brazil. It’s helped me understand why I was put on this earth. It’s so rare to start modeling after you’ve had three kids and as ‘mature’ woman of 30 years old at the time. It was really amazing that I became successful at it.

Later on, I was presented with the opportunity to coach for the children’s fashion show for PANDA— it was then, that I realized my ultimate passion. God put me into a career of modeling to only prepare me for my work with the children. It could have been a different destiny, but it was thanks to my successful modeling career that they knew who I was and I was lucky they invited me to be their coach. Of course I accepted and then I totally fell in love with everything about it.”

Micheline Etkin and Panda

“I probably have coached over 1,000 kids and I’m in love with every one of them. It’s so incredible to get close to those kids during the three days – rehearsals, fittings, and the actual fashion show. I get hugs and kisses and get to hold their hands right before the show and say, “Let’s send a lot of healing thoughts to all the children around the world.” It’s always incredible to see how amazing they are and how they commit to it. I think this was a mission for me.”

“I was really touched when I found out that the young models I worked with during my runway career saw me as their mentor and role model. I knew what they were feeling because it can be a harsh industry for lots of people, there’s lots of rejection in the fashion industry. If you’re not prepared, you cannot handle a modeling career. But, when you start later on like I did, with more experience in life, you take it all differently; you understand it’s not about you, it’s about what they’re looking for. You never let anyone put you down.”

micheline etkin stars of the season

“And it’s what I wanted to teach these young girls, to love themselves unconditionally and always stand up for themselves – to not let anyone put them down for any reason whatsoever. By loving yourself as you are, you’re going to project confidence and will stand out in the crowds. Your energy changes.”

We love Micheline’s passion for helping children and young models. She truly is more than just a beautiful face, she also has a beautiful heart. The fashion industry doesn’t have to be mean or catty, and Micheline is the perfect example of that.

What does a typical day look like for you now?

“I don’t have a routine because we travel so much and we’re always on the go, but I’m always planning where we are going next.”

When she is home, Micheline loves to watch Brazilian TV and cook! She told us that she loves cooking different types of food, and enjoys finding new ethnic markets around the valley. And, of course, she’s always busy planning the next event for Stars of the Season, PANDA, and Casa Brazil.

You’ve attended so many grand events in all your travels. What has been the most glamorous?

Brazilian Carnaval parade – being in the Brazilian Carnaval parade”

“There are about 4,000 people in the one samba school with you dancing and singing, and many thousands more in the Sambodromo (the samba arena) watching you live and also singing and dancing. The exchange of energy is surreal and unreal, there’s no way I could explain the feeling, you’ll have to be there to see it and feel it! There’s nothing like it!

I was lucky to be one of the leads twice in a Samba School and right before you get started with the presentation, you get the chills and your heart stars racing, you know that the world will be watching. It’s one of the biggest live events and parties you’ve ever seen. It’s so much FUN!”

micheline etkin carnival

Couture in the Suburbs was so lucky to sit down with this amazing woman. Micheline really showed us that being a model is about more than just wearing pretty clothes and walking down runways. It’s about having a confidence that attracts people, and then influencing them to help give back to those in need. We can’t wait to see what Micheline has in store next. With this much talent and passion, we know she isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Clothing Swap Tempe

clothing swap tempe

Sunday was the perfect day with good weather, friends, free food, and a clothing swap. CO-OPhx welcomed us to their Tempe clothing swap, and even let us host our own DIY booth.

It was our very first time at a swap. It was such a fun and new experience for us. We loved mingling with other fashionistas and sharing our love of blogging with the Tempe community.

clothing swap tempe

Now we’re sure you’re wondering, “What is a clothing swap exactly?” Great question. Basically, whoever attends can donate up to ten items of gently used clothing along with accessories and shoes. These items are then displayed on tables and racks, and everyone who brought items is allowed to scurry about and “swap” for the same number of items you originally brought. The best part is that whatever items don’t get swapped goes to the International Rescue Committee. Clothing Swap Tempe ended up donating 15 full bags of clothing! How fab is that?

clothing swap tempe diy

Not only did we get to go, take pics, and swap, we also had our own DIY booth! Before the swapping began, women of all ages came to our booth and made cute colorful bracelets with us.

Check out more photos of the swap attendees on  our Facebook page!

Simply Audree Kate was also there with a DIY booth. Her project was a little bit more complex than ours (That girl seriously knows how to do-it-hersef!) Her project was fun twisted headbands ( and we both were lucky enough to make one).

Shoptiques was another booth right next to us. Besides looking absolutely fabulous in their Shoptiques gear, they were also holding a raffle giving away their adorable bathing suits, chunky jewelry, and a fabulous floral shawl.

Overall, today was filled with fashion, fun crafts, and prizes galore. Chloe Bosmeny and Lizzy Roman, (remember the events coordinators we interviewed in our preview?! Check out the interview here) did an amazing job organizing and setting up this amazing event.  The girls were definitely thrilled with the turnout and how successful everything was.

We couldn’t be more thankful to have been a part of Clothing Swap Tempe! Make sure you “Like” Clothing Swap on Facebook to find out when the next event is!

P.S. Thanks Cassie Goers for being a HUGE help today! This girl not only worked the DIY booth, she also grabbed photos and wrote the story. Couldn’t have done it without you. XoXo Couture in the Suburbs
